Convertida en toda una leyenda, la vida de Dorothy Dandridge fue una sucesión de esfuerzos y sacrificios, desde sus inicios en los clubs locales junto a su hermana hasta su prematura muerte con 42 años por sobredosis de medicamentos, pasando por su trabajo en Hollywood, donde fue la primera actriz negra en obtener una nominación como mejor actriz en 1954 por Carmen Jones de Otto Preminger, con quien mantuvo un sonado romance.
